The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, has been around for almost two centuries. It has ebbed and fluctuated in such a predictably adaptive manner throughout it's relatively short life in the religious realm. This Church has a very sordid past, which it does a very good job of teaching for itself, whether the history is slanted or not, is yours to decide. Join me on a journey through the history of the LDS Church through the eyes of the people that were actually there. We will learn about the founding members, where the practices came from, where the Book of Mormon (Mormon Bible) came from, and most importantly, we will examine Joseph Smith in every aspect possibly available to us today.

On this episode, we jump in to part 2 of the Cody Noconi discussion about entheogens. Part 1 established a brief world history of hallucinogen use throughout the 10,000 years we can speculate upon; part 2 focuses on just Joseph Smith and Mormon history, essentially compiling the theory that Jo used hallucinogens for himself and possibly drugged his parishioners to incite spiritual experiences. It may be controversial. It may strain credulity and raise red flags of skepticism. One may call bullshit at the very onset of the discussion, but this is a viable theory that needs to be discussed openly in the public square of Mormon history. If Jo’s use of entheogens helps to explain any aspect of his religion it needs to be a topic of open discourse. If any listeners have competing theories that provide more explanatory power than this, please get in touch with Cody or Bryce and we’ll further this conversation.

On this episode, we invite on amateur Mycologist Cody Noconi to discuss the history of entheogen use in the human race. Much of the information has been well substantiated by multiple historians and Cody has merely compiled it and brought it to the listening audience. We cover human history from the Fertile Crescent all the way to the enlightenment period, maybe we’ve been stoners for longer than historians think. Once we get into Hermeticism and Alchemy, the connections to entheogen use starts to become very powerful, to the point we can’t ignore its influence. Please take this as a jumping off point to engage in researching this topic for yourself.

On this episode, we finally jump into the Gallatin election day battle and the aftermath. Two diametrically opposed mobs matched each other’s ante as things continually escalate out of control. Jo and Rigdon take the Danites to Diahmen to impose their will upon elected officials. Lilburn Boggs organizes a militia to answer the Mormon aggression of 150 stripling warriors cascading across county lines in violation of Missouri law. Nobody holds the legal or ethical high ground as violent rhetoric is matched by violent action on both sides of the Mormon-Missouri conflict.

On this episode, we take the opportunity to have a conversation with an armchair Mormon historian known as the host of Year of Polygamy and Color of Heaven podcasts, Lindsay Park. Lindsay has made a livelihood from communicating Mormon history, and strives daily to actively open roads of discussion between believers and ex-Mo’s which typically remain less travelled. She now works as assistant director of the Sunstone Foundation to bring Symposiums to the world. We talk about her work and the ways she’s been successful in communicating Mormon history to her believing loved ones. From there we go on to discuss the history of polygamy and how it affected the Church since 1831. Was Joseph’s polygamy all a fabrication by Bloody Brigham Young?

On this episode, Jo and Rigdon come riding into Far West and decide to throw over the whole game board that’d been strategically placed by powers much larger than them over the past 5 years. First thing on the chopping block, the heads of all dissenters. D-Day David Whitmer’s nickname finally comes into play as he’s chased out of Far West along with Ollie Cowdung, John Goebbels Whitmer, Leadfoot Lyman Johnson and Double-Dub Phelps. A grand cleansing purges all who dare question the authority of the Prophet and his advisors. Hingepin Rigdon issues public death threats to those defectors and to all who oppose the Saints in Missouri; “It will be…. a war of extermination!” from the mouth of Jo’s spokesman. We read the entire July 4th Oration which was responsible for so much violence in Missouri in late 1838; Patreon subscribers get access to 50 extra minutes of reading the whole speech instead of just the crescendo.

On this episode, we invite an actual Mormon historian to offer context and perspective on the timeline. John Hamer grew up in the church but eventually came to join the Community of Christ. He’s been studying Mormon history for decades, abundantly evident when listening to any podcast he’s featured on, and we simply can’t ask him enough questions. We cover in detail the transition time from Kirtland to Far West in 1837-38 as well as the social pressures existing between the Mormons and the Missourians. We end with a big discussion of the schism crisis after Jo’s death with some of the largest break-off sects (Strangite, Cutlerite, Rigdonite, Parrishite, etc.), then finish with the reorganization that gave the RLDS church its name. We restrained ourselves to 2 hours of talking for everybody’s sake, but there are no promises we’ll keep to the same restriction next time John’s on the show!

On this episode, our scope lands from mid-January to mid-March, focusing on three separate but equal locations. Kirtland, Ohio was the center of dissent and violent mob action against Jo and his loyalists. Along with a few other families, Jo and Rigdon were forced to flee Kirtland, leaving the main church building on fire in their wake and arriving in Far West, Missouri as a temporary safe haven. Things weren’t well in Far West either. The trusted church leaders held a tribunal and excommunicated or put on hold the Whitmers, Oliver Cowdery, and W. W. Phelps until Jo and Rigdon get into town. The saints are faced with some hard decisions in the coming year. Do they stay in Kirtland and follow a breakoff faction; or follow the one true prophet, Joseph Smith, to Missouri, where saints are frequently shot or chased from their homes? We wrap up the discussion with a topical subject currently rising in relevancy out of Nevada. The Church of the Devil may share a bit more in common with Mormonism than we initially perceived…

On this episode, we pick up the historical timeline to finish out 1837 and glimpse into 1838. Dissent and defection have never attained levels elevated beyond what we’re seeing in the timeline now. The Parrishites, Brewsterites, the Church of Christ under Coe/Smalling/Harris, and a small number of other breakoff factions hit the open religious market in response to public dissatisfaction with Jo and his church. Jo, Rigdon and friends make their way from Kirtland to Missouri and back, only to be permanently chased out of Kirtland and relocate to Missouri during the harsh winter months. This episode is a two-parter and includes an interview with Marie Kent, host of the My Book of Mormon Podcast, talking about our show and the D&C in general, all while giving us a glimpse into her life and study of Mormonism.

On this episode, our historical timeline awaits and there is a lot to cover. We spend the majority of the episode talking about a court trial where Jo was being tried for conspiracy of assassination. A man named Grandison Newell, a vicious anti-Mormon, filed a complaint that Jo commanded two men to kill Newell in his home, a command issued by the will of God. Once a religious leader orders a homicide, that religious leader steps into the same realm as any two-bit mob boss, I’ll let you decide if Jo took that step or not. The rest of the episode is spent on Warren Parrish and the various church leaders that were apostatizing in Kirtland, Missouri, and really anywhere there was a Mormonite church.

On this episode, we finally reach the conclusion of our 3-part deconstruction of Mark Hofmann. From young missionary to old man in prison, this has been one wild ride with Mark from his birth in 1954, through his days forging documents throughout his 20’s and finally ending at his plea bargain at the age of 32. This episode even features a surprise interview from an unexpected guest with a funny voice.

On this episode, we begin with the Panic of 1837 and how it affected Mormon history. The world economy was in the early stages of a deep depression that lasted for more than half a decade. Monetary strains really begin to take their toll on everybody with money from the Kirtland Safety Society company as rapid inflation drives up their total portfolio to nearly $4 million. The real infighting begins as conflicting complaints are filed, and P-cubed (Parley P. Pratt) preaches a sermon about the decline of the church and lies coming from the leadership. D-Day David Whitmer, John Goebbels Whitmer, along with Ollie Cowdung (Oliver Cowdery) and Not-So-Smarty-Martin Harris are all considered to be in transgression and need to be straightened out. Never has dissent and blasphemy run so rampant through the quiet streets of Kirtland, Ohio. We finish up with a detail I didn’t originally perceive concerning the 1836 treasure digging trip to Salem, Massachusetts as well as some speculation on the human behind the historical Joseph Smith.

On this episode, we dive right back into a “clean cut” examination of the infamous Mark Hofmann. We cover from the end of 1983 up to the bombings in October of 1985. Even with nearly 3 hours of audio, there’s a lot being left out. Hopefully we’ll be able to wrap things up next week, but no promises…

On this episode, we take a break from the historical timeline to examine a person that has been shrouded in mystery since making his way onto the Mormon historical scene in 1978; Mark Hofmann. He’s a man responsible for manufacturing an unknowable number of forgeries and selling them to the Church and other private collectors. All of his actions eventually lead up to 3 bombs going off, killing two people and severely injuring Hofmann himself. This is part one and it gets us up to the Salamander Letter in 1984, a year and a half before bombs start going off.

On this episode, I tell everybody just how at home I felt at the Sunstone Symposium. Sunstone is a convention for Mormons and non-Mormons to gather together and talk about the hard issues, with presentations by authors, historians, podcasters, and directors of various foundations; some believers, others non-believers. I had the opportunity to totally geek out and interview some authors, historians, and podcasters that I revere and frequently cite as sources for my research. The audio quality isn’t great, but the content is superb. You’ll hear audio clips from Grant Palmer, D. Michael Quinn, H. Michael Marquardt, John Hammond, Lindsay Park, and John Dehlin. For links to their works check the bottom of the show notes.

On this episode, we’ll start out with the Safety Society Company absorbing Oliver Cowdery & Co. printing press, expressing just how much power it really had. After that we’ll discuss 1830’s politics of the Whigs versus the Democrats and what that meant for the Mormons in Ohio and Missouri. Then to wrap the show up, we’ll spend the last half discussing dissent in the church and just how fractioned everything was getting by mid-1837, we may have even found the first possible coup attempt against Joe, but who really knows for sure.

On this episode, we’ll be talking about dissent in Kirtland and Bloody Brigham coming to Joe’s rescue, after which we’ll lightly touch on John Cook Bennet to compare him to Brigham Young. After that, there’s a public dispute about the nature of God between Rigdon and Ollie and we can see who Joe sided with from a later quote. Finally, to close out the episode we dive head first into the huge topic of the Kirtland Safety Society “Anti-Bank-ing” Company, and I bring on a guest to help parse out the confusing language in the articles of agreement for the bank. We also touch on something that’s been all but stricken from the historical record, but marks the blueprints for the Danites.

On this episode, we take a dive into 1836 to catch everything up. Until this time, we’ve just covered the big ticket historical topics that occurred in 1836, so we need to get everything else caught up. We also introduce 2 new NaMo nicknames for people that have been poking around the timeline for a while now. We start off with a discussion about the Hebrew school the presidency organized to be taught by Joshua Seixas. After that, William Smith and Joe get in a fight, and Joe loses. Following the fight, Joe releases a statement clarifying the church’s position on slavery and abolitionism, needless to say, Joe does the PR friendly move, and punts down the middle. We finish up with a discussion about 1836 treasure hunting, and Joe getting swindled by a guy named Burgess, as well as a few minutes devoted to the shooting in Orlando.

On this episode, we start off with a discussion about the history of Mormon temples. This launches us into a discussion about the resources necessary to build such a structure, as well as how they paid for by the church. After that we discuss 6 pages in the History of the Church that sound balls to the walls crazy, I wonder what was in that anointing oil. This leads us into a question about a bigger Mormon history issue, is there a naturalistic explanation for the miraculous angel and dead prophet sightings of the Kirtland Temple dedication ceremony? The episode concludes with a discussion about Ollie and Joe’s friendship, as well as the overarching problem with Mormon Temples.

On this episode, we jump back into the historical timeline! We start off with the wiles of a Michael H. Chandler, and how he made $2400 off Joe's fascination with ancient artifacts, then, the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants are voted in as scripture by every member of the church. After that, Big Daddy Cheese is given a living stipend and fees for giving patriarchal blessings, and we talk about another first vision account, only this one is taken from Joe's own diary. To finish out the episode, we read a couple of autobiographical accounts covering the end of 1835, and leading into 1836, the second of which takes us into talking about the first real sex-scandal we have good evidence for, the one between 18 year-old Fanny Alger, and 30 year-old Joseph Smith. We don't run short on crazy for this episode, so strap in and enjoy!

On this episode, we take a clean cut look at one largely controversial topic in Mormon history. Until 1978, no person having any black lineage could hold the priesthood, which denied them access to the highest kingdom of celestial heaven. Any black person that made it to heaven before the priesthood ban was lifted, was merely elevated to level of eternal servant (slave) of the white and delightsome men that make their own planets in the highest level of celestial heaven. What could have caused such a monumental shift in Mormon doctrine about blacks not having the priesthood? Turns out, the story is much more complicated than it first appears.

LeGrand Richards Interview w/audio:
http://thoughtsonthingsandstuff.com/the-legrand-richards-interview/
Transcription of interview clip:
WALTERS: On this revelation, of the priesthood to the Negro, I’ve heard all kinds of stories: I’ve heard that Christ appeared to the Apostles. I’ve heard that Joseph Smith appeared; and then I heard another story that Spencer Kimball had had a concern about this for some time and simply shared it with the apostles, and they decided that this was the right time to move in that direction. Now are any of those stories true, or are they all…
RICHARDS: Well, the last one is pretty true, and I might tell you what provoked it in a way. Down in Brazil, there is so much Negro blood in the population there that it’s hard to get leaders that don’t have Negro blood in them. We just built a temple down there. It’s going to be dedicated in October. All those people with Negro blood in them have been raising the money to build that temple. And then, if we don’t change, then they can’t even use it. So Brother Kimball worried about it, and he prayed a lot about it.
He asked each one of us of the Twelve if we would pray – and we did – that the Lord would give him the inspiration to know what the will of the Lord was. And then he invited each one of us in his office – individually, because you know when you are in a group, you can’t always express everything that’s in your heart. You’re part of the group, you see – so he interviewed each one of us, personally, to see how we felt about it, and he asked us to pray about it. And then he asked each one of us to hand in all the references we had, for, or against that proposal. See, he was thinking favorably toward giving the colored people the priesthood.
Then we had a meeting where we meet every week in the temple, and we discussed it as a group together, and then we prayed about it in our prayer circle, and then we held another prayer circle after the close of that meeting, and he (President Kimball) lead in the prayer; praying that the Lord would give us the inspiration that we needed to do the thing that would be pleasing to Him and for the blessing of His children. And then the next Thursday – we meet every Thursday – the Presidency came with this little document written out to make the announcement – to see how we’d feel about it – and present it in written form. Well, some of the members of the Twelve suggested a few changes in the announcement, and then in our meeting there we all voted in favor of it – the Twelve and the Presidency. One member of the Twelve, Mark Petersen, was down in South America, but Brother Benson, our President, had arranged to know where he could be reached by phone, and right while we were in that meeting in the temple, Brother Kimball talked with Brother Petersen, and read him this article, and he (Petersen) approved of it.

On this episode, we cover the History of the Church recounting of Sylvester Smith v. Joseph Smith. A couple of month's long journey had riled up some unfriendly feelings between Sylvester and Joe, but luckily, Joe wasn't in the wrong for any situation, and everything was Sylvester's fault. After that we talk about organizing the quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and finish out with a discussion about the 1835 version of the First Vision account.

On this episode, we conclude the march of Zion's camp to Missouri. No white Lamanite skeletons in this part of the trip, because Joe and friends get down to business. From running battle scenarios under General Lyman Wight, to dying like sheep with the rot, Zions camp deals with the worst of times all for a test of faith. Listen in for the unexciting, uneventful, anti-climax that brought the march of Zions camp to a close.

On this episode, David Michael of the My Book of Mormon Podcast joins us to talk about Zion's camp. Strap in for a two parter, because there is just too much to talk about and 7 hour episodes are too much work. How does a shepherd react when a wolf devours the flock? Joe decides to make a 1,000 mile march with a band of merry men for the purpose of "peaceful reinstatement" of the Missourian Mormons to their homes, following the battle for Zion that happened in November of 1833. What wiles and deeds are the Mormons up to on this military march? Listen and find out! (Spoiler alert: A great white Lamanite corpse is unearthed!!!)

On this episode, we take a step back to ask, what is Campbellism? Luckily Adam Gonnermn got in touch through twitter to make a correction about connections between Mormonism, and Campbellism, and we devote an entire episode to hashing out the details. Let's see what we can learn from Adam about strictly Campbellite beliefs, and see how possible it is that they made their way into the Book of Mormon. Spoiler alert, they do! Now its just a matter of asking how those beliefs got there in the first place. . .

On this episode, we wrap up 1832 with an early dictation of Joe's history that was recounted to empower Joe's divinity claim above that of Rigdon's. It works, and 1833 transitions pretty smoothly with the formation of the School of the Prophets. Doctor Philastus Hurlbut enters the timeline and is excommunicated twice, and goes on a mad crusade to expose the Mormon church. The Word of Wisdom is introduced, and a battle ensues in Jackson County, Missouri.

On this episode, we take the historical timeline closer to the end of 1832. Everybody is focused on getting the printing press up and running in Independence Missouri, and they don't even realize that a viper lurks in the grass. We're introduced to a few new people that get their very own nicknames, and the bloody viper even gets his own long-awaited introduction. From April 14th, 1832 on, Mormon history will be forever changed.

Entire Aaron Dewitt time capsule letter:
"Logan, Utah  Jan. 31, 1875
To Mrs. Elizabeth Durrant:

My Dear Sister:
    How to commence this letter I have promised you so long. I hardly know, but will say in the first place I have been deceived, led into error, imposed upon, deluded, beguiled into a false religion in my youth and spent the best part of my life in a wilderness, a desert, a land of sage and salt, away from all enlightenment and civilization, among the most degraded tribes of Indians on the Western hemisphere.  And what is still more worse, I have had to mingle with A BEASTLY, BLACKHEARTED, BLOODY PRIESTHOOD; a set of treacherous villains, as full of meanness as old Satan, and as thirsty for blood as a stinted leech.

While these are facts, they are not half told;
For hundreds have been killed for gold;
Both men and women have been slain
And robbed to add to Brigham’s gain.

I will here mention a few of the most inhuman and cruel acts ever committed by any man-eating savage in the darkest ages, and which none but a corrupt priesthood could ever perpetrated.  All of these have been done in Utah since I came here by men claiming to hold THE HOLY PRIESTHOOD OF THE SON OF GOD, and sent by their great Prophet and leader to do these deeds of blood and plunder in the name of God Almighty.

On the 12th day of September, 1857, two days after I arrived in this accursed land, 119 men, women and children were murdered while traveling to California, by a band of Mormons painted as Indians, and led by a Mormon high priest, a pious president of a stake of Zion, and a wise ward bishop.  After the emigrants had defended themselves against those wretches for three days beneath a burning sun in a sandy desert, WITHOUT A DROP OF WATER, they dressed two beautiful little girls in white and sent them to a spring nearby. But as they tripped along towards the sparkling stream they met the bullets of those merciless Mormons and fell dead into the water they were trying to secure to save their own lives and quench the parched throats of their beloved parents.  Finally John D. Lee, a Mormon bishop, who had just been anointed A KING AND PRIEST TO GOD, and who had eighteen wives given to him for being so great and good, sent a flag of truce to the poor, parched up, bleeding emigrants and promised them protection if they would give up their arms and go back to the nearest town.  This they gladly agreed to; but mark the next act of this sanctified saint.  They had not gone a half mile from their camp, when this great deliverer gave the command to his men to fire, and every man was shot down and every woman screamed and ran.  The terrible, sorrowful scene that ensued no tongue can tell.  Every woman was caught and ravished, murdered, robbed of her jewelry, stripped naked and left unburied on the burning sand.  In a few days nothing was left of all those beautiful forms but the bleaching bones the prairie wolf could not devour.  Then every child those bloodhounds thought could tell the tale of their infernal villainy was beheaded or cut to pieces, and scattered quivering with its bleeding friends.  Then those pure-souled priests plunged their hands into the gory clotted blood of their victims, and with outstretched arms toward heaven, EXPRESSED THEIR GRATITUDE TO GOD for so great a favor; to Him who doeth all things well; but who will undoubtedly, when they meet Him, hear His laugh re-echo through the caverns of the damned, saying, “I told you I would laugh at your calamity and mock when your fear cometh.”

All the property of those murdered men and women was gathered together the value of one hundred and fifteen thousand dollars, besides thirty-five thousand dollars in gold, and sent to their old master-murderer Brigham.  And this is how he sits in his office, wags his big toe, and makes his means, and then boasts that he is THE GREATEST FINANCIER ON EARTH, and owns nothing but what the Lord has given him.

Another and similar case is that of the murdered Morrisites, a religious body of simple-minded souls, who had met together for devotional exercise in a small valley on the banks of the Weber River in the summer of 1862, when a corps of the Nauvoo Legion, led by cowardly Captain Burton, who is now on a mission preaching the Gospel of Mercy to you dark benighted Britons, and inviting you to the home of the free and the land of the brave, but he is not gallant enough to come home himself.  He is the dastardly dog who crawled on his belly, like his ancient progenitor which tempted Mother Eve, until he was near enough to fire a cannon and blow down the house where those poor souls had met.  Then, after they had surrendered, and given up their few fire arms, the poltroon shot and killed Joseph Morris, Mr. Banks, and two women, one with a beautiful baby nursing at her breast, took the rest of the camp prisoners, put them in the penitentiary, and finally fined them one hundred dollars each, just because they did not believe in the rascality of Brigham Young, and do as they were told.

What bloody deeds, what sin and strive
What sacrifice of human life,
What deeds of plunder have been done,
To raise a gory throne for Young.

I will next mention the most perfidious act coupled with the foulest murder ever committed since the world began.  IT WAS IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT, when three of the Salt Lake City police were sent by the great Seer and Revelator of all the world, to see Dr. Robinson and ask him to set a broken limb for a poor man who, they said was writhing in agony.  The Doctor had just retired to bed, but at his murderers’ entreaties, he dressed himself, and in a few moments was on his errand of mercy.  He had not gone far when one of the villains, who walked behind, struck him on the head with a meat chopper he had stolen for the purpose, and cleft open his skull. The others fired their pistols immediately, and blowing out their victim’s brains, fled.

But my soul sickens at these dreadful deeds, or I would tell you of the brutal murder of Yates, the killing McNiel, the assassination of Borman, the shooting of Brassfield, the slaughter of the Akins party, the emasculation of Jones, and finally the butchering of him and his poor old mother.  I would also mention the dead man in the meat market, the three men in the barn, the murder near the Warm Springs, the shooting of Pike in the streets of Salt Lake City in broad daylight, the murder of the Potters and Parishes, of Rhodes and Roberts, and HUNDREDS OF OTHERS WHO HAVE BEEN MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD, and robbed to satisfy the avaricious cravings of as foul a man and as false a Prophet as ever disgraced this sin-stained earth.

These horrible deeds have all been committed in our holy Zion, and not one of the perpetrators ever brought to justice.  In fact, there has been no justice in the land.  A few years ago a man’s life was not worth a cent who durst utter such words as there is evil in the land, or sin among the Priesthood.  “You do as you are told!” has been the Gospel preached in this priest-ridden place for the last quarter of a century. In the fall of 1857, I heard our Prophet in a congregation of three thousands souls, tell his bishops they were to “counsel” the brethren to do as they were told; and, said he “if they don’t do it, lay righteousness to the line and judgment to the plummet.  If  you don’t know what that is, come to me and I will tell you!” He then threw back his head and with a revolting grin, DREW HIS FINGER ACROSS HIS THROAT, a sign the anointed ones well understood.  And yet, the old bilk, with his smooth slang will make his innocent dupes believe he is free from guilt, and that he is THE LIGHT, THE TRUTH, AND THE WAY, and that he has a place prepared for them, where the waters are flowing placidly – a land of milk and honey.

But the waters are stained with blood, and the milk is turned to
whey,
And the honey has lost its sweetness, the people seem to say;
And dupes are getting scarcer, and obedience is dead,
And all the old man’s judgments and plummets, too, have fled.

THE HAND-CART EXPEDITION Then there was the hand-cart company that crossed the plains in 1856.  The details of their distress caps the climax of all horrors.  Could I portray that terrible journey and the sufferings of those poor souls, your very heart would bleed.  Three ounces of flour per day was all they had to eat.  Upon this scanty fare they dragged their carts with 100 pounds of luggage over the worst kind of road, and more than five hundred miles through snow, fording rivers whose currents are of the swiftest kind, and their waters always cold.  Then at night, when those poor, wet, shivering souls came into camp they had no wood to make a fire.  At times a few small willows could be obtained, just enough to bake their scanty cake.  It did not take them long to eat their supper, for a mouthful each was all they had.  So hungry were they, that some gnawed the flesh off their own arms, ate roasted hide, or fed upon their shoes.  One-fourth of all who started, DIED OF STARVATION ON THE WAY.

From five to fifteen died every night for over 300 miles of the road.  So weak and weary were these living skeletons that they could scarcely bury their dead.  Every night a pit would be dug just large enough to place the dead in, and a shallow covering of dirt thrown over them.  Those that dug the grave one night expected to be placed in theirs the next.  Many a one prayed that his spirit might leave his frame of bones for a berth among the blessed.

Why did they start in this way? do you inquire.  Because this false prophet had told them that it was the Lord’s plan of emigration, and the only way to secure salvation. They believing him to be a true prophet, had faith in all he said, and started on their journey, 1,400 miles, as late in the season as August.  As they traveled on Westward toward the Zion of their hopes, songs could be heard from every cart and prayers from every camp.  But before they got five hundred miles on their weary pilgrimage, THE SNOWS BEGAN TO FALL, the wintry winds to blow, and the keen frost and piercing cold set in.  Then their suffering commenced in earnest.  Still they trudged along day after day, full of faith in God and holy priesthood, and day after day endured greater pain.  Finally their limbs began to freeze, and pieces fell from their worn-out bodies. They became dispirited and pined away and died, as I have already told you.

So sad and sickening is this Gospel plan,
As taught by Brigham, to poor fallen man,
That every time I mention his ill name,
It sends a shudder quivering through my frame.
I also tremble for the deeds he’s done;
For life destroyed, for blood he caused to run;
For victims frozen on the plains, through him,
While starving, suffering, falling limb from limb.

Dear Sister, in this sad letter I have told you the truth, AS IT IS IN JESUS CHRIST, and as I expect to meet at the final bar of retribution.  All these deeds and a thousand others equal to them in baseness and brutality, have all been committed under the cloak of religion.  But I must tell you more of them at another time.

I will now tell you the reason why we could not leave this blood-stained land, I mean ten or twelve years ago.  In the first place, we were a thousand miles from the nearest town East, eight hundred miles to the nearest settlement West, and God only knows how far to any place north and south.  On all this vast tract of land, NO WHITE MAN DWELT, no civilization was known, none but the red men roamed the dreary solitudes.  To travel such a space required considerable food, a good wagon and team, in fact, everything necessary for a three month’s pilgrimage.  Nor was it safe for a few men to go together, unless they were well-armed.  Again, every Bishop knew your business AND WAS ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT.  If you started, they would send men to drive off your stock, and thus you would be compelled to return.  Then, if you did not behave and act the hypocrite, the bishop would send the Danites to use you up, send you across lots to that bright brimstone home we read about.  Thus you see it was almost impossible to get away.  But now we have a railroad across the plains and settlements every little way and civilization is coming to Zion.  If the Lord won’t come the law will, and if Jesus is not approaching, justice is.  Then all who want can leave.  But now the priests want us to go, and we wish to stay.

Burst off every fetter, remove this Priestly yoke.
And never rest contented, till every link is broke.
For every man in Utah and woman shall be free.
And shouts shall echo through the land for God and Liberty!

Hoping to meet you soon on earth life and finally beyond the confines of time measured out to mortal man.
I am affectionately,
Your Brother,
AARON DEWITT

On this episode, we take on the time period from the hot Missouri summer nights of 1831, all the way to the blooming beauty of an 1832 Ohio spring. We introduce a few new characters that get their very own NaMo nicknames, e.g. William Wines (Double-Dub) Phelps, John (Goebbels) Whitmer, and Philo (Dibble-Dabble). We even get introduced to our first contact with one of Joe's to-be plural wives, Marinda Nancy Johnson-Hyde-Smith-Smith-Hyde. Hingepin Rigdon and Joe team up to continue in their efforts to complete the "Inspired Translation" of the Bible, and get a whole bunch of kooky new revelations as a side order. The episode ends with the March 1832 beating/tarring/feathering, and a special little surprise from Rigdon.

On this episode, we attempt to deconstruct the Book of Mormon, just to see what it really is, and where it really came from. Turns out we only scratch the surface. This is part 3 of the CC-Book of Mormon episode broken up into smaller pieces. This episode also has a new bumper tacked on to the end, after the closing song.
