The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, has been around for almost two centuries. It has ebbed and fluctuated in such a predictably adaptive manner throughout it's relatively short life in the religious realm. This Church has a very sordid past, which it does a very good job of teaching for itself, whether the history is slanted or not, is yours to decide. Join me on a journey through the history of the LDS Church through the eyes of the people that were actually there. We will learn about the founding members, where the practices came from, where the Book of Mormon (Mormon Bible) came from, and most importantly, we will examine Joseph Smith in every aspect possibly available to us today.

On this episode, we invite on one of Warren Jeffs’ sons, Roy, to tell us his walk through growing up as a millennial in the FLDS under Rulon and Warren Jeffs. Roy’s story is very compelling and he has a lot to tell the world. Check out his other interviews and appearances in media in the following links.

On this episode, we invite returning guest, Lindsay Hansen Park of Sunstone and Year of Polygamy, to discuss some contemporary issues with modern-day polygamy and some of the prominent sects of Fundamentalist Mormonism. What some see as practicing religious freedom, others may consider sexual coercion and grooming from young ages, but the sexual dynamic of polygamy is only one small aspect of the day-to-day lives of these Mormons. After that we have another installment of Mormon Leaks Minute with Ryan McKnight to discuss the Trump posthumous work and the recent Homosexuality Pamphlet leaks.

On this episode, we continue our examination of Mormon polygamy by walking through more than a century of plural marriage history affiliated with Mormonism. We begin with the Second Manifesto of 1904 and discuss the rise of the Council of Friends and the resulting Fundamentalist Mormon sects which arose from the Council’s leadership. We finish the last half hour with a quick deconstruction of the modern FLDS and Warren Jeffs.

On this episode, we cover the major sprouts of Mormonism which sprang from the fertile religion Nauvoo soil. From the Strangites, to Whiteites, to Josephites, to Brighamites, to Godbeites, and back to Brighamites again, every major faction of Mormonism seems to have a highly polarized stance on polygamy. Politics plays it’s role as laws are passed in attempt to outlaw the twins of barbarism, slavery and polygamy, largely aimed at curtailing the religious overreach of the Mormon theocracy in Utah. This is part 3 in a multi-part series on the history of polygamy.

On this episode, we finally dive into polygamy. We’re ramping up for polygamy in Nauvoo prior to April 1841, but before doing so we have to set the historical stage to understand the world from which Mormon polygamy evolved. We begin with marriage from the dawn of historical time and skim across the top of major world religions throughout most of written history to finally arrive at the post-enlightenment western world filled with small groups of free-love proto-hippies. This is part 1 of a multi-part series on Mormon polygamy.

On this episode, we bring somebody into our timeline who will become an important dissenting voice against the Mormons throughout the rest of their years in Nauvoo, Thomas Coke Sharp. Raised by a Methodist preacher and learned in all things anti-Mormon, Thomas Sharp’s paper will become an interesting source of Mormon history moving forward through our timeline. After that, Jo gathers the entire Mormon population on the highest hill in town in a grand spectacle to dedicate the plot for the Nauvoo Temple, complete with the Nauvoo Legion parading around town in uniform and thousands of spectators. Newspaper outlets around the country pick up the story and all eyes turn to the Mormons’ new kingdom on the Mississippi. To round out the show for today, we’ll have on Ryan McKnight to discuss a Mormon leak and an exciting announcement that patrons heard in the exclusive Patreon only feed last week.

On this episode, we take a look at the avalanche of acts and ordinances that were being passed in Nauvoo to establish some semblance of a real operating city. Joseph Smith and his favored elites had a lot of work to do and were in the process of forming new committee and organizations on a daily basis to answer the myriad needs of the burgeoning community. Once again, we find speculation to be the sole ruling factor in the formation of any Nauvoo business or agency. Jo even passed an act against intolerant speech against people of faith, we can’t have those atheists building a church in Nauvoo now, can we? After that we’ll get into part 2 of my conversation with Jack Naneek of the Mormon Awakenings podcast, where we really discuss some hard issues with the church’s stance on LGBTQ+ people and the value churches give society. Patreon subscribers be sure to check your feed. There’s an exciting announcement with Ryan McKnight as a separate episode over there and patrons of the show get to hear it a week early.

On this episode, the era of excitement for the new official Mormon home in Nauvoo gets to the leadership’s collective head. Wreck-it Bennett gets up on the stand during his mayoral inauguration and sets out a number of decrees Nauvoo would need to fulfill if it’s to last into the coming decade. The Nauvoo government establishes a small number of committees and passes ordinances to set out the letter of the theocratic law. Nauvoo would be a temperate society, but effectively fostered an underground market for liquor, just like the U.S. government in the following century, but Jo and Bennett had their fingers on the knobs for who could buy and sell liquor within the city limits. This episode is all about organization by a group which had suffered from lack thereof for over a decade up to this point. After that we’re joined by Jack Naneek of the Mormon Awakenings podcast to discuss just what it means to be a member of the church and seek validation from our Mormon community.

On this week’s episode, we read through a bunch of the first revelation Joseph Smith gave in Nauvoo that made it into the D&C, section 124. Since the passing of the Nauvoo Charter, the Mormons could finally rest easy that they wouldn’t be chased out of Illinois after living there a year like had happened in Missouri, so they set up camp. By that, I mean, Jo gave a revelation dictating the organization of Nauvoo to build it up, starting with the most important parts, like building a house for Jo and his family. Section 124 has a bunch of important names in it so we review most of the names and why they’re relevant as we move through the revelation. After that, Nauvoo holds its first election in February of 1840, electing John Wreck-it Bennett to the office of Mayor and various church elites to the offices of aldermen and councilors. Jo finally had a legally sanctioned theocracy with no looming threat of a Missouri militia to come and take it away like 2 years ago.

On this episode, we finally introduce someone who’s been long overdue for our historical timeline, Heber C. Kimball, maybe you guys can help me come up with a fitting NaMo nickname for him. After that we jump into a letter Bennett wrote to the brethren to be published in the Times and Season stating the Nauvoo Charter had finally passed the Illinois State Legislature. Bennett was a powerful lobbyist and ally to have on the Mormons’ side, and he specifically called out a few government officials who were paramount to the Charter’s success. Then we find out that God gave a sign in the heavens to the Mormon missionaries in England, signaling the passing of the Nauvoo Charter, legends are born easily but never die. After that, we’re joined by a special guest who recently dove really deep into the BoM to try and make sense of it all. Patreon supporters be sure to listen to this episode in the Patreon feed to hear the special extended interview with Colt.

On this episode, we dive right back into the historical timeline with talk on some detailed land purchase agreements. Jo and the Mormons were in a bad spot when they began settling Nauvoo and land speculation was the new counterfeit money to hobble the church along with a falsely inflated economy. Land speculators never pass on making some money on destitute people, and Jo does the same when selling land to the Mormons, but actual specie exchange rarely happened. After that, we bring on Ethan Dodge, the second half of the Mormon Leaks team, to discuss the recent leaks leading up to conference weekend as well as a little bit about himself. To cap it off, I’ll speak very briefly about Mythcon 2017 in Milwaukee.

On this episode, we invite on Tom and Cecil of the Cognitive Dissonance podcast to talk about the worst presidential candidate in American History, Joseph Smith. From New York to Illinois, everything Jo touched fell into a state of chaos and ruin. By the time we get to his 1844 presidential campaign, he’s won and lost dozens of business ventures, built and dissolved a handful of newspapers, and fully established his Mormon theocracy on the Mississippi. Join us for all the shenanigans and don’t forget to check out Tom and Cecil’s podcasts, Cognitive Dissonance and, for all the history fans out there, Citation Needed on all your favorite podcast vehicles.

On this episode, we record from NAUVOO during the John Whitmer Historical Association conference. We talk with historians William Shepherd, Joseph Geisner, and H. Michael Marquardt about the Council of Fifty and the Hodge murders, the subjects these historians have been researching most recently. After that, I offer my own musings wrapping up the conference with a few headlines which have come out in the Mormon community recently. Thanks to everybody who made the JWHA conference a resounding success and such a pleasure to attend this year!

On this episode, we catch up with the Quorum of the Twelve apostles to see how their missionary efforts were developing in Europe prior to their departing England to make their way back to Nauvoo. They got in some sight-seeing and spare no detail in reporting everything back to the brethren on the other side of the pond. We continue to dive into a number of newspaper articles covering the Mormon expansion efforts. To round out the history for today, we feature a debate between a skeptic and Mormon apologist, but it’s not what you’d expect. After that, we’ll be talking to Mike who just posted an interesting analysis in the ExMormon subreddit comparing Utah to the socialist utopia of Norway. At least somebody listened to the teachings in the Book of Mormon about socialism and wealth.

On this episode, we jump right in to adding an incredible well of depth to the character of Joseph Smith by reading a number of excerpts from William Morain’s “The Sword of Laban, Joseph Smith and the Dissociated Mind”. The excruciating pain from his childhood leg surgery coupled with the death of his eldest brother in his late teens had significant impacts on Jo’s psyche, baggage he would carry for the rest of his life. Maybe we can understand the inner-workings of a broken mind by viewing decisions Jo made through child’s eyes. Jo calls the Quorum of the Twelve home from their mission in England but permits Parley P. Pratt (P-cubed) to tarry a bit longer to continue his publishing duties with the Liverpool Book of Mormon and the Millennial Star. The economic outlook for Nauvoo looked good on the surface at the end of 1840, but the whole thing was built on credit and there was a jobs vacuum affecting every Mormon who chose to settle roundabout. After that we invite recurring correspondent, Ryan McKnight, for a Mormon Leaks Minute before dealing with some listener feedback.

On this episode, we try to gain new perspective. John Bennett addresses the brethren during the October 1840 conference to gain access to the in-group of trusted Mormon leaders with a new rule requiring 2 or 3 witnesses to any crime. How would this affect polygamy as it begins to lurk under the surface of Nauvoo? We bring on a very special guest to discuss the plight of women’s rights in the 19th-century and how having a child out of wedlock essentially condemned single mothers to a life of misery and hardship.

On this episode, Jo, Bennett (Brokeit), and Thompson, join forces to draft the Nauvoo Charter for approval by the Illinois State Legislature. We read right through the whole thing because that’s how we roll on this show. The Charter was essentially a copy and paste of the Springfield City Charter, but there were a few subtle additions which enshrined the city of Nauvoo as a sanctuary to Jo and the Mormons, and created a separate military arm, the Nauvoo Legion, as the law enforcement agency through which Jo exercised nothing short of martial law under the banner of his newly founded theocracy. Jo was untouchable.

On this episode, we do something we’ve never done before; cover a news story as it’s breaking. Hurricane Harvey has already wreaked billions of dollars in devastation on Texas and one concerned parent wants to reach his missionary son. Unfortunately, the rule book doesn’t allow for this so the Mission President cut off all attempts of John O’Conner to reach his missionary son. This story is currently developing and we’ll bring updates as we learn more.

On this episode, we bid farewell to some prominent members of the Mormon church as so many were perishing due to famine and resulting sickness. Joseph Smith Sr., Big Daddy Cheese as we know him, imparts blessings on his wife and children as the darkness begins to close in. After that, we catch up with Bloody Brigham and the quorum of the Twelve on their incredibly successful mission to England, where Brigham was getting a feel for what it was like to run his own religion. Later we’ll bring on Ryan McKnight for a Mormon Leaks Minute about church leaks featuring Denver Snuffer and a huge document of sex abuse allegations raised against the church. It’s not a happy episode today…

On this episode, Jo goes on a smear campaign against the POTUS, Martin Van Buren. Jo claims his dog is more fit to run the country than Van Buren, likely giving him the confidence and social clout to run for President in the 1844 election. After that, Jo introduces baptisms for the dead and the waters of the Mississippi in Commerce were continually troubled by people getting dunked for loved ones. We wrap up the historical portion with discussing just how much John C. Bennett influenced Jo throughout his short time with the Saints. After that we bring on an old friend, Kaitlyn McKenna, to see how she’s been doing for the past two years since we last spoke after she was kicked out of her parent’s house and was forced to start a gofundme campaign for basic living essentials.

On this episode, we jump into early spring of 1840 with Elias Higbee in Washington D.C. still advocating on behalf of the Mormons. Jo gets back to Nauvoo after having abandoned the Mormons during a very harsh winter to speak with the U.S. government to get some kind of recourse for the Saints’ suffering in Missouri. Rigdon is laid up with sickness and won’t respond to letters while in his fragile state. Jo holds a general conference to handle the issues in Nauvoo which had cropped up in his absence and we’re finally introduced to one of the most infamous characters in all of Mormon history as he finally makes his way into our historical timeline. After that, I’ll be speaking with Mark Naugle so he can tell us a little of his story and the social impact of people officially leaving the church in droves. On this week’s episode, we cover the first 3 months of 1840 when Jo met with the United States Congressional committee to petition them for redress for what the Saints had suffered in Missouri. The meeting met every day over a week’s time and increasingly became more skeptical with each day of discussion with Jo. Finally, a resident of Missouri makes it to the meeting to give his side of the conflict and the committee resolves that Missouri should handle Missouri’s problems. After that we have a bit of a longer Mormon Leaks Minute segment with correspondent, Ryan McKnight, to discuss a treasure trove of 37 leaked documents from Bruce McConkie’s unpublished personal writings. Patrons get an extra segment discussing McConkie’s hatred of evolution.

On this episode, we continue our conversation with Cody Noconi from the Psilly Rabbits podcast about the Smith-entheogen theory. We cover the second half of the paper to be presented at Sunstone Symposium which deconstructs entheogen use through Joseph Smith’s early years and into Mormonism. The amount Smith had practiced honing dose, set, and setting finally pays off during the Kirtland Temple dedication ceremony. Public entheogen use seems to drop off sharply after this ceremony, being forced underground for many understandable reasons. We conclude with discussing possible weak points in the theory, as well as limitations, and finish with our overarching conclusion for the entire paper. We hope to see some of you at Sunstone on Saturday 29 July 2017 for the presentation, or for the live My Book of Mormon show at Squatter’s pub that same evening! If you can’t make it to either of those, consider coming to church with Marie and I at the Joseph Smith Memorial building on Sunday to stand in solidarity supporting those hurt by the bigotry forwarded by the Mormon church.

On this week’s episode, we jump right into the latter part of 1839 with the quorum of the Twelve petitioning Jo to release the copyright on the Book of Mormon to begin printing the 1840 edition. The Times and Season church periodical begins circulating, and Jo finally departs for Washington D.C. to speak with the POTUS about helping the Mormon refugees out of their dire straits. The meeting doesn’t go as planned, but Jo and Rigdon weren’t done asking the government for relief and are stuck in D.C. for another month and a half waiting for Congress to come back from winter recess. We finish up the episode with airing a conversation I had with Molly UnMormon on Doubting Dogma Podcast, discussing the Martin and Willie handcart companies and other fun church stuff. On this episode, we cover July to November of 1839. We start with a discussion about how scarce documentation is for this blackout period of Mormon history and what that means for historiographies which cover this time period. After that, Jo tells us how we can tell if a spirit is from God or the devil, which hearkens back to his magic roots. After that we take an extract from Bloody Brigham Young’s manuscript history to follow the travel of the Twelve as they made their way closer to boarding a ship for England. After the history, we debut an exciting new segment to leak off the church and then we get into some of the church’s new face of homophobia and discuss just how new their stance on the LGBTQ community really is…. Spoiler alert, the church is still led by a bunch of red-scare bigoted octogenarians who are on the wrong side of history.

On this week’s episode, we cover June and early July 1839. Jo was signing land purchase agreements faster than he could tour the landscape to see if the sale was a good deal or not. He names a new town to be built under the banner of Zarahemla and continues to visit a bunch of Mormons to set straight the record of how the BoM came to be. The quorum of the Twelve prepare for their journey to England by listening to a lecture from Jo about some finer points of Mormon doctrine and we compare them to the doctrine before and after this newest evolution. Finally, we wrap up the episode with a teaser for how to talk to missionaries or TBM loved ones about church history and BoM archaeology.

On this week’s episode, we jump into all the work and frustration associated with building a city from a scratchy, bitey, black-water swampland. Sickness, exposure, and simple lack of resources find Jo and friends in desperate need of brokering whatever deal necessary to establish a new home for the thousands of homeless Mormon refugees. We get our newest introduction to the NaMo nickname family and Jo begins dictating his own revised history to be published in the Times and Seasons in response to the recent uprising of the Spalding theory. Later on, we’ll be talking dangerous American history with Prof CJ of the Dangerous History Podcast.

On this episode, we’ll be talking about the PR nightmare that was the Spalding theory as it embodied a new resurgence in the public eye. Spalding’s wife, Matilda Davison, and Hingepin Sidney Rigdon went at it in a public letter exchange where she laid out the theory claiming the Book of Mormon came from her late husband’s fiction and Rigdon responds with ad hominem attacks and blatant lies. After that we follow up on the conversation with Charone Frankel from last week’s episode.

On this episode, we shift focus from Quincy to Liberty Jail and back as we follow Bloody Brigham Young stepping into the vacuum of leadership, making a power play in Jo’s absence. Jo agrees to buy the land deal proposed by Isaac Galland sight unseen after he screeds to him about Mormon doctrine. Then Jo and friends are charged again in a Grand Jury with everything they’d already been charged, then proceed to escape during a transfer to Boone County. Everybody plays their part in the building up of Zion in their clean slate state, Illinois.

On this episode, we air an interview conducted at Boston University’s theological department during the Mormon history tour. We get to hear from Professor Emeritus Carl A.P. Ruck of classical history. Ruck has been publishing in the field for 3 decades and sits as one of the foremost historians who has extensively researched certain religious rituals and their use of entheogens. He gives his opinion on whether it’s feasible for Joseph Smith to have used them in the early days of Mormonism. After the conversation, we dive into a discussion about what attendees can expect during this year’s Sunstone Symposium presentation on July 29th, “Revelation Through Hallucination”. Marie Kent, host of My Book of Mormon podcast, will be in SLC for Sunstone as well; we’ll be doing a live show from Squatter’s pub. Check both Facebook pages for more info!

On this episode, we view the Mormon exodus from Missouri to Illinois through the eyes of those locked up in Liberty Jail. Jo and Hyrum try to run the church from their dungeon, while Rigdon is trying to reestablish the Mormon kingdom which was lost. Jo has letter correspondence with his wife and Presendia Huntington Buell at the same time. We finish, as usual, with random musings about Hingepin Rigdon and his belief in a God that would dare to cause him such personal suffering.

On this episode, we discuss just how terrible the winter of 1838-1839 was for the Mormons, especially for the incarcerated leadership. The Saints were forcefully removed from Missouri and landed in temporary refugee camps along the Mississippi, settling a little town called Quincy, IL. Jo, Hyrum, Rigdon, McRae, Baldwin, and Wight are all wasting away in Liberty Jail until Doniphan gets cert for an habeus corpus hearing. Rigdon pulls out the ol’ preacher moves and sways the congregation to release him; even in his fractured mental state, he’s still got it. We end the episode with a brief wrap up of the Mormon history tour as well as ReasonCon.

Most of the past week and a half has been driving, but I've been in Northern Utah for 4 days now and had to post up another log recounting everything so far. Utah is full of such cool Mormon history and many museums related to the entire pioneer era. Another small addition, Christopher Nemelka is an interesting guy to have a conversation with. He was nice enough to set up an interview at his studio on his Marvelous Work and Wonder monthly video broadcast. It's posted up on the Naked Mormonism Facebook page, all 2.5 hours of it, try to watch without spontaneous aneurysm...

Most of today was driving, however the morning was spent in Palmyra and Fayette at the Smith farm, Sacred Grove, and Whitmer farm. The church has put out some really slick videos trying to explain the history, but somehow they still obfuscate the reality. Now on to a fun evening with friend of the show Jonathan Tindell of Secular Stories podcast!

Most of today was spent looking through microfilms of Luman Walter's probate file. He must have been somewhat wealthy because the surrogates who handled his possessions afterwards did a fantastic job of cataloging all of his personal inventory. The rest of the day was spent at the Hill Cumorah visitor center talking with a delightful elder missionary.

Isaac Hale didn't like Jo when him and Emma began courting. Luckily for Jo, Hale's heart softened and allowed Jo to move in to the farm once "persecution" in New York became too much to bear. We cover two days in this travel log because the majority of them were spent driving. The rest of the log includes my musing on an interview I conducted with a professor at Boston University about Joseph Smith's possible entheogen use.

Kirtland Day 2 involved touring the CoC owned Kirtland Temple as well as the Isaac Morley farm. He didn't like the entheogen theory, but the exchange was incredibly respectful and I'm happy to call him a friend.

It's a good thing this tour is spending 3 full days in Kirtland! I began with a tour of historic Kirtland at the Whitney store and home, ending at the sawmill and ashery. After that it was on to the temple to make an appointment for the basement to belfry tour. Then on to Hiram, OH wherein lies the John and Elsa Johnson farm. The rainy day made it so nobody else was on these tours so I took full opportunity to engage with all the missionaries and hear a number of touching personal stories.

Missouri is jam-packed full of really cool Mormon historic sites. It's also home to a number of break-off factions which differ in some small ways from the Brighamite sect in SLC. There are some profound differences between the visitor centers of the Community of Christ, the Temple Lot (Hedrickites), and the Brighamite LDS centers; some discuss Mormon history a little more openly than others.

Mostly a driving day, but I had to stop at Carthage Jail on the way to Missouri. Nothing in the world fires me up like revisionist history and Carthage Jail reeks of it. Luckily, if you know the right questions to ask, the missionaries there have to answer truthfully, despite the believing Mormons sighing in the background at the pursuit for truth.

Martin's Cove was something that cropped up on my radar mere days before passing it by. The Martin handcart company was forced to camp for 5 days in a small horseshoe cove that offered a brief respite from the brutal southern Wyoming blizzards which would forced them to wait out the storm. The missionaries called it hallowed ground, I call it a gigantic fuck up that cost a lot of people everything they had, including their lives.

On this episode, we attempt to get to the bottom of all these Mormon document leaks as of late. We have a discussion with Ryan McKnight, /u/FearlessFixxer and founder of MormonLeaks, covering some of the recent leaks released by the leak project. We conclude our discussion with whether or not we can trust sources leaked anonymously from a source that claims to “have a vetting process”. Ryan stands by every document released; it may be best to skepticize them for the time being.

On this episode, shock and awe is an effective strategy. In the wake of the Haun’s Mill massacre, the Jo and the Mormon leadership are given a final ultimatum, surrender or the twin cities (Far West & Adam-ondi-Ahman) fall and the Mormons fall with them. General Lucas of the Missouri militia dictates four stipulations of surrender as the Mormons are outnumbered 5 to 1 and surrounded. Mormon Colonel George Hinkle negotiates an extension for the night but Jo and the leaders are taken as hostage to force compliance to surrender. The twin sanctuary cities are violated and the national media explodes with rumors and fake news.

On this episode, we finally dive into something highly anticipated for years, the Haun’s Mill Massacre. The title says it all; we discuss very adult concepts with graphic detail (listener discretion advised). We read 5 first-hand accounts of the massacre and bring it all together with Stephen LeSueur’s reconstruction of events. We finish out with a list of factors that lead to this fateful day in American history.

On this episode, we invite Christopher Smith on for a follow-up of our last conversation. In order to be historically accurate, it’s important to take every possible opportunity to learn from historians and scholars. We discuss the proper terminology to use when analyzing Mormon colonization of Utah by getting into the nitty gritty of what constitutes battle and conquest as opposed to genocide. In retrospect, genocide does seem like an overly- sensationalized description of these fairly standard settler vs. Native conflicts throughout frontier America.

On this episode, we cover a lot of ground but only advance our timeline a total of 4 days. Mormon depredations throughout Daviess County are answered by vigilante militia depredations against Mormons. The anti-Mormons are routing the Mormons to concentrate their population in the twin sanctuary cities, Diahman and Far West in preparation of a mass siege to put down the Mormon fanatics once and for all. Captain Samuel Bogart’s troops take two Mormon spies prisoner and Captain Fearnought assaults their camp on Crooked River with the Danites. Once Governor Lilburn Boggs catches word of the Danite aggression, he answers with a 4,000-man militia armed with an Executive Order to exterminate the Mormons. We bring on Andrew Torrez of Opening Arguments podcast to shed some expert light on the situation.

On this episode, we take an opportunity to talk with budding Mormon historian, Christopher Smith, who just landed his professorship at U of U! We talk about the current timeline and some of the broader social tensions plaguing Jo and the church in 1838. After that we move on to talk about Dr. Smith’s dissertation concerning the Mormon colonization of Utah and just how bloody it really was. Apparently Bloody Brigham was a bit apprehensive to slaughter thousands of Natives but somehow was convinced otherwise.

On this episode, we begin with a wrap up of the live God Awful Movies in Chicago and talking about everything the atheist/skeptical community has to offer. After that we jump into a discussion about the Mormon refugee crisis going on in mid-October 1838 in Missouri. Jo had to feed the flock and the only way to do so was through raiding and pillaging the Daviess County locals. We read a warm letter exchange between people on opposing sides of the conflict along with a large excerpt from Benjamin Johnson, the first-hand recounting from a Mormon raiding party participant. After that we move on to part 2 of a discussion with Brian and Sean of Mythicist Milwaukee; be sure to check their podcast feed for part 1!

On this episode, the duration of our discussion lands us in September and early October of 1838. We start with brief introductions to Generals Alexander Doniphan and David Atchison; two non-Mormon allies the Mormons desperately needed when it seemed everybody in Missouri wanted them dead or gone. Jo and Lyman Wight retained these generals for legal counsel prior to a ceremonial preliminary trial held to charge Jo and Wight with mob violence. Rumors were also circulating that the Mormons were trying to ally themselves with the Native Americans to attempt an overthrow of the Missourian Government. Rumors don’t need to be founded in reality to scare the shit out of the public. Diahmen comes under siege from Dr. W. W. Austin’s troops after the Mormons steal a convoy of arms and take three prisoners. After a buy-out of the non-Mormons in Daviess County is negotiated, these anti-Mormon vigilantes lay siege on DeWitt and force its surrender nearly 2 weeks later. Mormons are chased out of their homes with many dying from exposure and illness. Jo had to do something to keep his people from starving…
