The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, has been around for almost two centuries. It has ebbed and fluctuated in such a predictably adaptive manner throughout it's relatively short life in the religious realm. This Church has a very sordid past, which it does a very good job of teaching for itself, whether the history is slanted or not, is yours to decide. Join me on a journey through the history of the LDS Church through the eyes of the people that were actually there. We will learn about the founding members, where the practices came from, where the Book of Mormon (Mormon Bible) came from, and most importantly, we will examine Joseph Smith in every aspect possibly available to us today.

On this episode, we dive back into the world of Joseph Smith to find out how the Book of Mormon came to life. From persecution in Palmyra, to haraguing in Harmony, to flim-flamming in Fayette, Joe moves wherever he can find sanctuary to "translate" in peace. We've covered where the content in the BoM might have come from, but not how it actually came to life. The time period from Joe getting the plates in 1827, up to mid 1829, faces the white hot light of scrutiny in this mother lode of history, and textual analysis.

On this episode, we take a look at the View of the Hebrews (Circa 1823) theory for the authorship of the Book of Mormon. But, the fun doesn't stop there. Where else can we possibly look for possible source material? The KJV Bible? Local maps? Textbooks from the early 19th century? All of the above? Let's just see how original the Big Bad BoM is....

On this episode, we take a break from the usual historical study and have a discussion with a theist. It's not the regular kind of episodes, but hopefully it provides some insight and discussion points for anybody that has a discussion like this with a friend, or family member. I hope you enjoy, and leave feedback about what you think.

On this episode, we take a look at the Spalding theory as the source text for the Book of Mormon. The Spalding theory has been stuck in the margins of Mormon history for quite some time. Well, we try to rip it out of the margins, and into the spotlight for critical examination, and a fair trial in the court of historical possibilities. There's a lot of information to cover, and a lot of conjecture to answer to, but the evidence seems to be there, to support the claims of the theory. Does it seem plausible to you?

On this episode, Sidney Rigdon is in the crosshairs. He starts as a young boy working on the farm by day, and reading history books by firelight at night. Fast forward a decade or so, and Rigdon is running the biggest Campbellite church in Pittsburgh, PA. The end of the episode dabbles into the pre 1830 connections between Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon.

On this episode, we discuss exactly what happened in Joseph Smiths 1826 trial. This is a supplement to episode 11, and contains what happened in the aftermath of the trial. A forgery by a Mormon historian, the proof of historical texts, and epic controversies abound. Joe's 'leg bail' is brought to life.

On this episode, we take a look at the 1826 trial of Joseph Smith for being a disorderly man and an imposter. Raw court notes, biased accounts, and polarizing consequences fill this episode to the brim. How will the verdict affect our up-and-coming prophet?

On the previous episode, agnostic theist Jesse and I, engaged in a spirited debate. We skimmed over various topics about God and the explanation for the universe, but didn't dive very deeply into each topic. Well, this discussion more than makes up for it. If you can handle dealing with the mediocre sound quality, you're in for a ride through a minefield of intellectual traps and bantering conversation, ranging across a vast swath of topics. I think this conversation was a little more fun and engaging than the previous episode, so I hope this almost 3 hours of conversation stays interesting enough to keep everybody hanging in there until the end.

Let me know what you think, or better yet, who do you think won?

On ths episode, we take a quick break from history, to get an introduction to a pretty basic debate about DNA, abiogenesis, and God's fingerprints of design. It's really more of a discussion than a debate, which I enjoy quite a bit more.

Any subsequent discussions that Jesse and I have, will be patron only episodes from here on, so this is just another Patreon Teaser episode. Hopefully this will be the first of many discussions, with people that have a belief they want to defend.

Let me know what you think about the conversation.

On this episode, we follow Joe and the whole Smith clan leading up to Joe and Emma's move to Harmony, PA. Treason, death threats, and the seeds of an empire are planted in the fertile soil of the burned over district, from which rises, the crippled pheonix that becomes the original Book of Mormon manuscript. Joe is forced to hatch a plan under immense pressure, that has dynamic and far-reaching consequences, with the fate of the plates, relying solely on his Joe's clever wit. Will he crack under the weight of the situation, or will he thrive on the stress, and grind against the opposition with the support of those around him?

Ep9-Joseph's super powered knockout punches of DOOM!!!

On this episode, we find out some of the stressors in Joseph Smith's life that lead up to his acquiring the plates. Failing at a new marriage, living in the attic of his parents resource starved house, a father in law that hated him, what was Joe to do? Get the gold plates once and for all, no matter who stands in his way! The family drama is unbearable, the stakes are the survival of the family, and the consequences are dire...

On this SPECIAL EDITION episode, I give everybody a teaser of what Patron only content. It's a simple document reading of David Whitmer's "An Address to All Believers in Christ" booklet written in 1887. There are 5 total chapters, in this first booklet, and I think the other two are about as long. This is the last episode of the year, so merry ChrismaHanukKwanzErnalia/Winter Soltice/Gregorian New Year to everybody, and I hope you'll join me in 2015 for more fun with Joe and his friends!

Ep8- D-Day David Whitmer's Grand Introduction, Hiram Page's Rise and Fall

On this episode, the next heavy hitters are brought onto the scene. D-Day David Whitmer along with all the men in his family and Hiram Page, the brother in law. We start off learning about David's life before Joe, Emma, and Oliver Cowdery (Cowdung Allover) moved into the little house with the Whitmer family, in Fayette, N.Y. Then I get sidetracked chasing some scripture references in The Doctrine & Covenants (Mormon Canon). Then we find out why the history surrounding Hiram Page is so sparse in reported Mormon history, even though he was Joe's cousin, and one of the 11 witnesses to the plates. Then, I end the episode by telling you why I chose D-Day David for David Whitmer's NaMo name, and describing why I'm doing the show and who will benefit from Patronage.

On this episode, we continue to examine the recent essays released by the Mormon church on polygamy in early church practices. The first essay told us how the church arduously stopped polygamy, but didn't talk about Joseph Smith very much. Well that's what the second essay was for. The church titled it, "Plural Marriage in Kirtland and Nauvoo". The church finally came out and talked about Joe's 30 to 40 wives and it is a doooozie! This episode is packed with way more information than I initially thought it would be, when I first started researching the 3000 word essay. I hope you enjoy!

On this episode, we take a look at the essays recently published, by the church, about polygamy in the early church. There were two essays totaling almost 7000 words with lots of mormon speak and convoluted history. They are clearly worth deconstructing from the naked perspective. This episode only tackles the first of the two essays entitled 'The Manifesto and the end of Plural Marriage'. Next episode we'll tackle the church's claims on Joe's polygamy, when we analyze 'Plural Marriage in Kirtland and Nauvoo'.

On this episode, we finally get to analyzing one of the primary translators for Joe, Oliver Cowdery, or as we call him, Cowdung Allover. While little is known about Cowdung, before he starts translating for Joe, we know that he is a founding member of the Church, and an integral part in it's early development. We also talk about how the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods were reportedly 'restored' to the Earth, to Joe and Cowdung through a couple of angels in the woods of course, well that's how the church tells it...

On this episode, we continue talking about Not-So-Smarty-Marty Harris. There was too much to pack into one episode and keep still keep it interesting so it had to be extended. We learn about the finer details of the investment Marty is about to engage in. Smart business men try to vindicate an investment they are about to jump into and Marty is no exception. He takes a manuscript called the 'Caractors' document, which is currently possessed by The Community of Christ (a break-off LDS faction), to a college professor named 'Not-So-Smarty-Marty's-Super-Study-Smarty-Party-Pooper-Pal Charlie Anthon' to make sure "Reformed Egyptian" is actually a thing.

On this episode, we introduce a new character. South Park fans rejoice, here comes Martin Harris! DUM-DUM-DUM-DUM-DUM!! Or as we come to know him, Not-So-Smarty-Marty. We talk about the fateful day he met Joe and spoke with his entire family about this "Golden Bible" that Joe found. Near the end of the episode, we read the testimony of Abigail Harris (Marty's cousin) and Lucy Harris (Marty's cousin-wife) and find out the kind of man Marty really is.

On this episode, we discuss the lovely Emma Hale, who later became Emma Hale Smith when she married Joe, and even later becomes Emma Hale Bidamon, much after Joe dies in his notorious gunfight. We find out what Joe's father in law thinks of Joe, as well as how it relates to his conviction for fraud. There's even an interview on Emma's deathbed, given by her son, Joseph Smith III, to close the episode out.

On this re-recording of Episode 1, we take a few minutes to introduce the host of the show, Bryce Blankenagel, and discuss what the show is about. At the time of the re-recording, the show has been running for a year and a half, and there is plenty to talk about to get you, the listeners, familiarized. We discuss what the titles for each episode in the backlog mean, as well as what you can expect when downloading any given episode. This is also a great opportunity to introduce the protagonist of the Mormon historical timeline, Joseph Smith. We start with his birth on December 23, 1805 in Poultney, VT and take it away from there. The episode finishes up with a discussion about Mark Hoffman from the 1980’s, as well as reading the infamous “Salamander Letter,” which can be found in the show notes. If you’ve never heard a single episode of the show before, this is a great introduction. If you’re an avid listener, thank you for coming back and listening to this re-recording, as well as your faithful listenership.
