Most of today was driving, however the morning was spent in Palmyra and Fayette at the Smith farm, Sacred Grove, and Whitmer farm. The church has put out some really slick videos trying to explain the history, but somehow they still obfuscate the reality. Now on to a fun evening with friend of the show Jonathan Tindell of Secular Stories podcast!

Most of today was spent looking through microfilms of Luman Walter's probate file. He must have been somewhat wealthy because the surrogates who handled his possessions afterwards did a fantastic job of cataloging all of his personal inventory. The rest of the day was spent at the Hill Cumorah visitor center talking with a delightful elder missionary.

Isaac Hale didn't like Jo when him and Emma began courting. Luckily for Jo, Hale's heart softened and allowed Jo to move in to the farm once "persecution" in New York became too much to bear. We cover two days in this travel log because the majority of them were spent driving. The rest of the log includes my musing on an interview I conducted with a professor at Boston University about Joseph Smith's possible entheogen use.

Kirtland Day 2 involved touring the CoC owned Kirtland Temple as well as the Isaac Morley farm. The day ended with my recounting of a deep Mormon history discussion with Karl Anderson, known locally as Mr. Kirtland. He didn't like the entheogen theory, but the exchange was incredibly respectful and I'm happy to call him a friend.

It's a good thing this tour is spending 3 full days in Kirtland! I began with a tour of historic Kirtland at the Whitney store and home, ending at the sawmill and ashery. After that it was on to the temple to make an appointment for the basement to belfry tour. Then on to Hiram, OH wherein lies the John and Elsa Johnson farm. The rainy day made it so nobody else was on these tours so I took full opportunity to engage with all the missionaries and hear a number of touching personal stories.

Missouri is jam-packed full of really cool Mormon historic sites. It's also home to a number of break-off factions which differ in some small ways from the Brighamite sect in SLC. There are some profound differences between the visitor centers of the Community of Christ, the Temple Lot (Hedrickites), and the Brighamite LDS centers; some discuss Mormon history a little more openly than others.

Mostly a driving day, but I had to stop at Carthage Jail on the way to Missouri. Nothing in the world fires me up like revisionist history and Carthage Jail reeks of it. Luckily, if you know the right questions to ask, the missionaries there have to answer truthfully, despite the believing Mormons sighing in the background at the pursuit for truth.

Martin's Cove was something that cropped up on my radar mere days before passing it by. The Martin handcart company was forced to camp for 5 days in a small horseshoe cove that offered a brief respite from the brutal southern Wyoming blizzards which would forced them to wait out the storm. The missionaries called it hallowed ground, I call it a gigantic fuck up that cost a lot of people everything they had, including their lives.

We have a discussion with Ryan McKnight, /u/FearlessFixxer and founder of MormonLeaks, covering some of the recent leaks released by the leak project. We conclude our discussion with whether or not we can trust sources leaked anonymously from a source that claims to “have a vetting process”. On this episode, shock and awe is an effective strategy. In the wake of the Haun’s Mill massacre, the Jo and the Mormon leadership are given a final ultimatum, surrender or the twin cities (Far West & Adam-ondi-Ahman) fall and the Mormons fall with them. General Lucas of the Missouri militia dictates four stipulations of surrender as the Mormons are outnumbered 5 to 1 and surrounded. Mormon Colonel George Hinkle negotiates an extension for the night but Jo and the leaders are taken as hostage to force compliance to surrender. The twin sanctuary cities are violated and the national media explodes with rumors and fake news.

On this episode, we take a look at what political overreach by religious organizations looks like at the incremental level. All the research for this episode spawned from the featured Deseret News article about the LDS Church filing an amicus brief in the Supreme Court case concerning transgender bathroom rights. We talk with Callie Wright of the Gaytheist Manifesto to get an idea for just how prevalent this issue is. After that we have a discussion with Andrew Seidel, attorney at Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) to discuss the real-world ramifications of this legal defense against redefinition of Title IX classifications. We end the episode with a petition for the church to take some outside consultants to stop the hemorrhaging of their membership or they will inevitably dwindle into obscurity; one wonders if they prefer the latter to save their pride. On this episode, we invite Christopher Smith on for a follow-up of our last conversation. In order to be historically accurate, it’s important to take every possible opportunity to learn from historians and scholars. We discuss the proper terminology to use when analyzing Mormon colonization of Utah by getting into the nitty gritty of what constitutes battle and conquest as opposed to genocide. In retrospect, genocide does seem like an overly- sensationalized description of these fairly standard settler vs. Native conflicts throughout frontier America.

On this episode, we cover a lot of ground but only advance our timeline a total of 4 days. Mormon depredations throughout Daviess County are answered by vigilante militia depredations against Mormons. The anti-Mormons are routing the Mormons to concentrate their population in the twin sanctuary cities, Diahman and Far West in preparation of a mass siege to put down the Mormon fanatics once and for all. Captain Samuel Bogart’s troops take two Mormon spies prisoner and Captain Fearnought assaults their camp on Crooked River with the Danites. Once Governor Lilburn Boggs catches word of the Danite aggression, he answers with a 4,000-man militia armed with an Executive Order to exterminate the Mormons. We bring on Andrew Torrez of Opening Arguments podcast to shed some expert light on the situation.

On this episode, we begin with a wrap up of the live God Awful Movies in Chicago and talking about everything the atheist/skeptical community has to offer. After that we jump into a discussion about the Mormon refugee crisis going on in mid-October 1838 in Missouri. Jo had to feed the flock and the only way to do so was through raiding and pillaging the Daviess County locals. We read a warm letter exchange between people on opposing sides of the conflict along with a large excerpt from Benjamin Johnson, the first-hand recounting from a Mormon raiding party participant. After that we move on to part 2 of a discussion with Brian and Sean of Mythicist Milwaukee; be sure to check their podcast feed for part 1!

On this episode, the duration of our discussion lands us in September and early October of 1838. We start with brief introductions to Generals Alexander Doniphan and David Atchison; two non-Mormon allies the Mormons desperately needed when it seemed everybody in Missouri wanted them dead or gone. Jo and Lyman Wight retained these generals for legal counsel prior to a ceremonial preliminary trial held to charge Jo and Wight with mob violence. Rumors were also circulating that the Mormons were trying to ally themselves with the Native Americans to attempt an overthrow of the Missourian Government. Rumors don’t need to be founded in reality to scare the shit out of the public. Diahmen comes under siege from Dr. W. W. Austin’s troops after the Mormons steal a convoy of arms and take three prisoners. After a buy-out of the non-Mormons in Daviess County is negotiated, these anti-Mormon vigilantes lay siege on DeWitt and force its surrender nearly 2 weeks later. Mormons are chased out of their homes with many dying from exposure and illness. Jo had to do something to keep his people from starving…

On this episode, we jump in to part 2 of the Cody Noconi discussion about entheogens. Part 1 established a brief world history of hallucinogen use throughout the 10,000 years we can speculate upon; part 2 focuses on just Joseph Smith and Mormon history, essentially compiling the theory that Jo used hallucinogens for himself and possibly drugged his parishioners to incite spiritual experiences. It may be controversial. It may strain credulity and raise red flags of skepticism. One may call bullshit at the very onset of the discussion, but this is a viable theory that needs to be discussed openly in the public square of Mormon history. If Jo’s use of entheogens helps to explain any aspect of his religion it needs to be a topic of open discourse. If any listeners have competing theories that provide more explanatory power than this, please get in touch with Cody or Bryce and we’ll further this conversation. On this episode, we invite on amateur Mycologist Cody Noconi to discuss the history of entheogen use in the human race. Much of the information has been well substantiated by multiple historians and Cody has merely compiled it and brought it to the listening audience. We cover human history from the Fertile Crescent all the way to the enlightenment period, maybe we’ve been stoners for longer than historians think. Once we get into Hermeticism and Alchemy, the connections to entheogen use starts to become very powerful, to the point we can’t ignore its influence. Please take this as a jumping off point to engage in researching this topic for yourself.

On this episode, Jo and Rigdon come riding into Far West and decide to throw over the whole game board that’d been strategically placed by powers much larger than them over the past 5 years. First thing on the chopping block, the heads of all dissenters. D-Day David Whitmer’s nickname finally comes into play as he’s chased out of Far West along with Ollie Cowdung, John Goebbels Whitmer, Leadfoot Lyman Johnson and Double-Dub Phelps. A grand cleansing purges all who dare question the authority of the Prophet and his advisors. Hingepin Rigdon issues public death threats to those defectors and to all who oppose the Saints in Missouri; “It will be…. a war of extermination!” from the mouth of Jo’s spokesman. We read the entire July 4th Oration which was responsible for so much violence in Missouri in late 1838; Patreon subscribers get access to 50 extra minutes of reading the whole speech instead of just the crescendo.

On this episode, we invite an actual Mormon historian to offer context and perspective on the timeline. John Hamer grew up in the church but eventually came to join the Community of Christ. He’s been studying Mormon history for decades, abundantly evident when listening to any podcast he’s featured on, and we simply can’t ask him enough questions. We cover in detail the transition time from Kirtland to Far West in 1837-38 as well as the social pressures existing between the Mormons and the Missourians. We end with a big discussion of the schism crisis after Jo’s death with some of the largest break-off sects (Strangite, Cutlerite, Rigdonite, Parrishite, etc.), then finish with the reorganization that gave the RLDS church its name. We restrained ourselves to 2 hours of talking for everybody’s sake, but there are no promises we’ll keep to the same restriction next time John’s on the show!

On this episode, our scope lands from mid-January to mid-March, focusing on three separate but equal locations. Kirtland, Ohio was the center of dissent and violent mob action against Jo and his loyalists. Along with a few other families, Jo and Rigdon were forced to flee Kirtland, leaving the main church building on fire in their wake and arriving in Far West, Missouri as a temporary safe haven. Things weren’t well in Far West either. The trusted church leaders held a tribunal and excommunicated or put on hold the Whitmers, Oliver Cowdery, and W. W. Phelps until Jo and Rigdon get into town. The saints are faced with some hard decisions in the coming year. Do they stay in Kirtland and follow a breakoff faction; or follow the one true prophet, Joseph Smith, to Missouri, where saints are frequently shot or chased from their homes? We wrap up the discussion with a topical subject currently rising in relevancy out of Nevada. The Church of the Devil may share a bit more in common with Mormonism than we initially perceived… Show Links: Links: Manuscript History of Brigham Young Autobiography of Benjamin F. After refutation and refutation of the refutation, the church decided that Jeremy was too cancerous to keep as a member and held a tribunal to excommunicate him, but Jeremy beat them to it. During the video of the excommunication, Jeremy says he’s excommunicating the church from his life and that this is a kangaroo court, truer words never spoken. On this episode, we pick up the historical timeline to finish out 1837 and glimpse into 1838. Dissent and defection have never attained levels elevated beyond what we’re seeing in the timeline now. The Parrishites, Brewsterites, the Church of Christ under Coe/Smalling/Harris, and a small number of other breakoff factions hit the open religious market in response to public dissatisfaction with Jo and his church. Jo, Rigdon and friends make their way from Kirtland to Missouri and back, only to be permanently chased out of Kirtland and relocate to Missouri during the harsh winter months. On this episode, our historical timeline awaits and there is a lot to cover. We spend the majority of the episode talking about a court trial where Jo was being tried for conspiracy of assassination. A man named Grandison Newell, a vicious anti-Mormon, filed a complaint that Jo commanded two men to kill Newell in his home, a command issued by the will of God. Once a religious leader orders a homicide, that religious leader steps into the same realm as any two-bit mob boss, I’ll let you decide if Jo took that step or not. The rest of the episode is spent on Warren Parrish and the various church leaders that were apostatizing in Kirtland, Missouri, and really anywhere there was a Mormonite church.

On this episode, we begin with the Panic of 1837 and how it affected Mormon history. The world economy was in the early stages of a deep depression that lasted for more than half a decade. Monetary strains really begin to take their toll on everybody with money from the Kirtland Safety Society company as rapid inflation drives up their total portfolio to nearly $4 million. The real infighting begins as conflicting complaints are filed, and P-cubed (Parley P. Pratt) preaches a sermon about the decline of the church and lies coming from the leadership. D-Day David Whitmer, John Goebbels Whitmer, along with Ollie Cowdung (Oliver Cowdery) and Not-So-Smarty-Martin Harris are all considered to be in transgression and need to be straightened out. Never has dissent and blasphemy run so rampant through the quiet streets of Kirtland, Ohio. We finish up with a detail I didn’t originally perceive concerning the 1836 treasure digging trip to Salem, Massachusetts as well as some speculation on the human behind the historical Joseph Smith.

On this episode, we take a moment to catch up on some current events in church. We start off with talking about a presentation given by Kim B. Clark about the Church Educational System (CES) and his future vision for the organization. After that we dive into a possibly legitimate contract that returned missionaries have to sign upon their return from the mission field. A TBM made the argument that it isn’t legitimate on the Facebook page, but it seems pretty real to me from all initial appearances. After that, we talk briefly about a post on the Zelph on the Shelf blog about the anti-porn movement undermining itself.

On this episode, we take a fantastic opportunity to speak with Esther who grew up in a small Canadian polygamist town. She takes us on a realistic journey of what it’s like to grow up in a polygamist family with 5 mothers and 49 siblings. Esther then takes us through her arranged marriage with a local man and what it was like to settle in to a home with a hostile sister-wife. Against all odds she overcame multiple pregnancies while going through nursing school. These struggles only mark the beginning in a life-long journey through the reality of FLDS polygamy, be sure to listen in for the entire story.

On this episode, we dive right back into a “clean cut” examination of the infamous Mark Hofmann. We cover from the end of 1983 up to the bombings in October of 1985. Even with nearly 3 hours of audio, there’s a lot being left out. Hopefully we’ll be able to wrap things up next week, but no promises…

On this episode, we take a break from the historical timeline to examine a person that has been shrouded in mystery since making his way onto the Mormon historical scene in 1978; Mark Hofmann. He’s a man responsible for manufacturing an unknowable number of forgeries and selling them to the Church and other private collectors. All of his actions eventually lead up to 3 bombs going off, killing two people and severely injuring Hofmann himself. This is part one and it gets us up to the Salamander Letter in 1984, a year and a half before bombs start going off. Second Anointing Joseph Smith III Blessing Gordon B. On this episode, I tell everybody just how at home I felt at the Sunstone Symposium. Sunstone is a convention for Mormons and non-Mormons to gather together and talk about the hard issues, with presentations by authors, historians, podcasters, and directors of various foundations; some believers, others non-believers. I had the opportunity to totally geek out and interview some authors, historians, and podcasters that I revere and frequently cite as sources for my research. The audio quality isn’t great, but the content is superb. You’ll hear audio clips from Grant Palmer, D. Michael Quinn, H. Michael Marquardt, John Hammond, Lindsay Park, and John Dehlin. For links to their works check the bottom of the show notes.

On this episode, we’ll start out with the Safety Society Company absorbing Oliver Cowdery & Co. printing press, expressing just how much power it really had. After that we’ll discuss 1830’s politics of the Whigs versus the Democrats and what that meant for the Mormons in Ohio and Missouri. Then to wrap the show up, we’ll spend the last half discussing dissent in the church and just how fractioned everything was getting by mid-1837, we may have even found the first possible coup attempt against Joe, but who really knows for sure. On this episode, we’ll be talking about dissent in Kirtland and Bloody Brigham coming to Joe’s rescue, after which we’ll lightly touch on John Cook Bennet to compare him to Brigham Young. After that, there’s a public dispute about the nature of God between Rigdon and Ollie and we can see who Joe sided with from a later quote. Finally, to close out the episode we dive head first into the huge topic of the Kirtland Safety Society “Anti-Bank-ing” Company, and I bring on a guest to help parse out the confusing language in the articles of agreement for the bank. We also touch on something that’s been all but stricken from the historical record, but marks the blueprints for the Danites.

On this episode, we take a dive into 1836 to catch everything up. Until this time, we’ve just covered the big ticket historical topics that occurred in 1836, so we need to get everything else caught up. We also introduce 2 new NaMo nicknames for people that have been poking around the timeline for a while now. We start off with a discussion about the Hebrew school the presidency organized to be taught by Joshua Seixas. After that, William Smith and Joe get in a fight, and Joe loses. Following the fight, Joe releases a statement clarifying the church’s position on slavery and abolitionism, needless to say, Joe does the PR friendly move, and punts down the middle. We finish up with a discussion about 1836 treasure hunting, and Joe getting swindled by a guy named Burgess, as well as a few minutes devoted to the shooting in Orlando.

On this episode, we start off with a discussion about the history of Mormon temples. This launches us into a discussion about the resources necessary to build such a structure, as well as how they paid for by the church. After that we discuss 6 pages in the History of the Church that sound balls to the walls crazy, I wonder what was in that anointing oil. This leads us into a question about a bigger Mormon history issue, is there a naturalistic explanation for the miraculous angel and dead prophet sightings of the Kirtland Temple dedication ceremony? The episode concludes with a discussion about Ollie and Joe’s friendship, as well as the overarching problem with Mormon Temples. Show links:

On this episode, we jump back into the historical timeline! We start off with the wiles of a Michael H. Chandler, and how he made $2400 off Joe's fascination with ancient artifacts, then, the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants are voted in as scripture by every member of the church. After that, Big Daddy Cheese is given a living stipend and fees for giving patriarchal blessings, and we talk about another first vision account, only this one is taken from Joe's own diary. To finish out the episode, we read a couple of autobiographical accounts covering the end of 1835, and leading into 1836, the second of which takes us into talking about the first real sex-scandal we have good evidence for, the one between 18 year-old Fanny Alger, and 30 year-old Joseph Smith. We don't run short on crazy for this episode, so strap in and enjoy!

On this episode, we bring on a special guest to talk about forgiveness. It may seem like a topic that doesn't have much of a place in the discussion about Mormonism, but prepare to be surprised. Cliff offers us a whole new perspective on regret and forgiveness that can lead to a much more mentally healthy perspective of religion and family relationships. You won't want to miss this discussion!

On this episode, we take a clean cut look at one largely controversial topic in Mormon history. Until 1978, no person having any black lineage could hold the priesthood, which denied them access to the highest kingdom of celestial heaven. Any black person that made it to heaven before the priesthood ban was lifted, was merely elevated to level of eternal servant (slave) of the white and delightsome men that make their own planets in the highest level of celestial heaven. What could have caused such a monumental shift in Mormon doctrine about blacks not having the priesthood? Turns out, the story is much more complicated than it first appears.

On this episode, we have another featured TBM (True Believing Mormon) on the show to discuss his beliefs and walk through Mormonism. This is merely part 1 where we get to know a little about Richie and his experience in the church, whereas part 2, to be released next week, is when we really get into some hard issues with church doctrine. After our discussion, a 5 to 10-minute rant turns into an hour long rant about homophobia in Mormonism. This isn't a standard Mormon history episode, but bare with me as I'm quite busy with two moves, and 2700+ miles of driving during the time this episode comes out.

Let's see what we can learn from Adam about strictly Campbellite beliefs, and see how possible it is that they made their way into the Book of Mormon. Spoiler alert, they do! Now its just a matter of asking how those beliefs got there in the first place. . .

On this episode, we wrap up 1832 with an early dictation of Joe's history that was recounted to empower Joe's divinity claim above that of Rigdon's. It works, and 1833 transitions pretty smoothly with the formation of the School of the Prophets. Doctor Philastus Hurlbut enters the timeline and is excommunicated twice, and goes on a mad crusade to expose the Mormon church. The Word of Wisdom is introduced, and a battle ensues in Jackson County, Missouri.

Hingepin Rigdon and Joe team up to continue in their efforts to complete the "Inspired Translation" of the Bible, and get a whole bunch of kooky new revelations as a side order. On this episode, we have a very enlightening conversation with two historians about the war of 1812. Transoceanic civil wars, back-stabbings by warring Indian tribes, impressment of sailors, and reportedly invincible armies are some of the topics of discussion. A leader emerges that Joe could have spent hours fantasizing about. How does this war effect Joe, and did he use some of the 1812 circumstances in his own Book of Mormon? On this episode, we discuss what happened from March, to July 1831. Joe makes his own trek from Kirtland, OH, to Independence, MO. This was done in the wake of the missionary journey by Ollie, Cowdung (Oliver Cowdery), Dick (Zyba)n Peterson, Peter Whitmer, and P-cubed (Parley P. Pratt), along with Freddy Willey (Frederick G. Williams). Joe wasn't satisfied with their success, so he decided to take charge, and handle the proselyting campaign in Missouri for himself. Or, maybe he was just searching for some solace for the trauma that was happening in his own life. If only we could step into Joseph's mind for just a second. . .

On this episode, we cover a lot of ground. We start out in late October 1830, and follow the missionary force from Fayette, New York, to Jackson County, Missouri. They make one meaningful stop along the way, and set in motion the mechanism to keep the church alive. Of course, Joe stayed plenty busy on his own in New York. He even makes a new friend, or connects with an old one, and everything gets thrown into high gear. The episode ends with trying to figure out some Mormon doctrine from the Pearl of Great Price. TLDR: God is a stupid dick, and Enoch was the best magician in the world.

On this episode, we have a great discussion with Kaitlyn McKenna. She was recently kicked out of her home for not going to church, among other things. She could use some help with starting her life from scratch, and I would urge listeners to follow the link provided. Patreon subscribers get the extended edition of our conversation, and I would highly recommend it!

On this episode, we start out by looking at the actual events surrounding Hiram Page's revelation about the location of Zion. Joe has to rein everybody back in, and put out fires just to keep some semblance of control. We are introduced to our three newest characters in the timeline: Parley P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, and Ziba Peterson.

On this episode, we take a break from the usual historical analysis in order to have a very enlightening discussion with Author David Fitzgerald. He's one of the leading Jesus mythicist authors with his book, "Nailed: Ten Christian Myths that Show Jesus Never Existed", and has catapulted himself into armchair Mormon historian status with, "The Complete Heretics Guide to Western Religion: Book 1 The Mormons". We start off discussing Jesus Mythicism, but move quickly into everything Mormon history. It's tough to express just how much fun this discussion was, and I look forward to many more in the future. Check out David's books by following the links, or googling David Fitzgerald.

On this episode, we talk about the people that Joe named to be his primary persecutors in Colesville, N.Y. Joe has to give a revelation to lift everybody's spirits, which results in the introduction of 'priestcraft', and the first real insurrection. Ollie opposes Joe, and Joe breaks his newly formed spine, like usual.

On this episode, we dive right back into the history! We find ourselves attending the first two congregations of the church, and take a brief moment to introduce a pre-Danite wild-card that's been unfairly benched during our narrative up to this point. After that, Joe takes a trip to Colesville and has his second and third run-ins with the N. Y. legal system. Does Joe get convicted of being a “disorderly person”, or does he get off on a couple of bullshit technicalities? Listen to find out...

On this episode, we take a very critical look at some of the more famous talks given by the late Boyd K. Packer. Hopefully no listeners hold any preference to Packer, because we tear down every possible aspect of this homophobic, mysoginistic's bully pulpit preaching. It gets personal, so strap in, and get ready for some fucked up, disconnected-from-reality bullshit from this rotting corpse.

On this episode, we talk about the interrum period from when Joe and Marty signed the contract with E.B. Grandin to publish the Book of Mormon, until the book is published in March 1830. A lot happens, and Joe starts to really gain a reputation for himself, with both dissenters, and supporters of his cause. Joe also gives some revelations about a quick $205,000 that prove to be laughably false.

On this episode, we take another break from the historical analysis to talk with listeners Preston and Melissa. We get to hear about their transition from returned missionary believer, to questioning, to lost in the real world after asking the hard questions about Mormonism. There's even a cameo from their daughter and she offers her unique perspective. I want to express my appreciation to their whole family for being so hospitable and nice to a stranger in their house with a microphone and laptop. It was a lot of fun talking with all of you, and learning so much.

On this episode, we try to track down the origin of the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods. Their origin is shrouded in mystery, and is reportedly of angellic origins. Did the priesthood come from John the Baptist, Peter, James, and John? Or did the Priesthoods evolve out of necessity for Joe's increasingly higher authority claim? Which conclusion makes more sense?

On this episode, we focus strictly on the testimonies of the 3 witnesses, and the 8 witnesses. Should we take them at face value and consider them unimpeachable, or is it worth taking a closer look? The quotes seem pretty open and shut at first glance, but let's really dive in to see what lurks under the surface, and discover the naked truth.

On this episode, we dive back into the world of Joseph Smith to find out how the Book of Mormon came to life. From persecution in Palmyra, to haraguing in Harmony, to flim-flamming in Fayette, Joe moves wherever he can find sanctuary to "translate" in peace. We've covered where the content in the BoM might have come from, but not how it actually came to life. The time period from Joe getting the plates in 1827, up to mid 1829, faces the white hot light of scrutiny in this mother lode of history, and textual analysis.

On this episode, we take a look at the View of the Hebrews (Circa 1823) theory for the authorship of the Book of Mormon. But, the fun doesn't stop there. Where else can we possibly look for possible source material? The KJV Bible? Local maps? Textbooks from the early 19th century? All of the above? Let's just see how original the Big Bad BoM is....

On this episode, we take a break from the usual historical study and have a discussion with a theist. It's not the regular kind of episodes, but hopefully it provides some insight and discussion points for anybody that has a discussion like this with a friend, or family member. I hope you enjoy, and leave feedback about what you think.

On this episode, we take a look at the Spalding theory as the source text for the Book of Mormon. The Spalding theory has been stuck in the margins of Mormon history for quite some time. Well, we try to rip it out of the margins, and into the spotlight for critical examination, and a fair trial in the court of historical possibilities. There's a lot of information to cover, and a lot of conjecture to answer to, but the evidence seems to be there, to support the claims of the theory. Does it seem plausible to you?

On this episode, Sidney Rigdon is in the crosshairs. He starts as a young boy working on the farm by day, and reading history books by firelight at night. Fast forward a decade or so, and Rigdon is running the biggest Campbellite church in Pittsburgh, PA. The end of the episode dabbles into the pre 1830 connections between Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon.

On this episode, we discuss exactly what happened in Joseph Smiths 1826 trial. This is a supplement to episode 11, and contains what happened in the aftermath of the trial. A forgery by a Mormon historian, the proof of historical texts, and epic controversies abound. Joe's 'leg bail' is brought to life.
